Mars Hydro - VG40 - 40W
Product Information:
The Mars Hydro VG40 is an excellent, high-quality, LED grow light for all types of carnivorous plants. These come in a set of 2 lights (20W each) that are 2’ long and can connect up to 16 lights together by daisy chain. The main reason I like these lights is for higher proportion of blue LEDs creating a very pure, and attractive white color temperature, plus better growth of particular species. More than two bars can be used for 2’ shelves for taller plants (3 bars should be sufficient for most high light plants, but 4 can be used for very high light plants). These are excellent for medium to medium/high light plants at a height of around 12-18”. With an IP65 waterproof rating, these can be used in wet environments.
NOTE: Lights have free shipping and will ship separately from plants.
Wattage: 40W
LEDs: 1.92 μmol/j; non-dimmable
Dimensions: 23.62”L x 1.96”W x 1.32”H
PPF: 77.37 μmol/s
Species: Pygmy Sundews, Pinguicula, Nepenthes, Utricularia, Genlisea (plus higher light species with >2 bars per rack)
Lighting:
Lighting is one of the most important aspects of growing carnivorous plants. Most carnivorous plants prefer very strong light, and the best results come from high quality LED grow lights. Not only does it stimulate fast growth, the plants will attain beautiful coloration — bright red tentacles on Sundews, red mouths on Flytraps, pink/purple/red on Tropical Butterworts, and deep reds on Sarracenia just as a few examples (some species will stay green in bright light but will be healthier). Sundews will produce more dew under proper lighting (not usually an issue with water, but lighting)! Bright light can make the plants a bit more compact and robust, but the increased health and better appearance are absolutely worth it.
Using LEDs is simple, and most designs have a dimmer switch to adjust the light intensity. Mount them over your growing area and roughly calculate the light intensity based on distance and dispersion.
Cheap LEDs are too weak, extremely energy inefficient, and limited in spectrum (types of light “color” that plants need). High quality LEDs are essential for healthy plants and will use far less energy and produce less heat (and last for many, many years). I’ve personally vetted and used these LEDs for my plants and can attest to their quality and function.
