Byblis liniflora
Description
Byblis (also called Rainbow Plants) are a beautiful genus of carnivorous plants that have dew covered leaves that glisten in the light. Most grow a tall or scrambling stem with elongated leaves covered in translucent hairs that secrete a dewy mucilage. Byblis evolved carnivory independently of all the other sticky carnivores and are the only members of their entire plant family. These are especially beautiful and unique amongst the carnivorous plants! This species is Byblis liniflora which is an annual species that grows incredibly fast, produces beautiful pink flowers with light streaks that readily self-pollinate, then dies shortly after. It can be regrown from seed quite easily every year to build up a small forest of Byblis!
There are two main types of Byblis, the annuals from Northern Australia and New Guinea, and the perennials from Southwestern Australia. The annual species grow in hot and wet environments in bright sun. They are easily to grow outdoors in the summer in warm climates. They will also grow well indoors under strong lights if the temperatures stay warm. Under bright light, the leaves may take on a slightly purplish color which contrasts with the bright green. Byblis liniflora is a smaller species that will grow into a compact plant around 4-8” tall, then produce many purple flowers. After it sets seed the plant will slowly decline, especially if the weather cools down in the Fall. When grown outdoors, these will catch tons of flies which will stimulate exceptionally fast growth. These love hot and humid conditions -- they grow fastest and most beautifully for me in 80-100F and high humidity, but can adapt to slightly cooler and drier environments. Great for warm/heated terrariums or hot windowsills with good light during the summer heat.
Byblis liniflora (Phillips Range) is a form that grows between 4-8" tall with a beautiful dense, Christmas tree shape. It flowers profusely for months with excellent wide-petaled, purple flowers with light colored centers. Photos 1-4.
Byblis liniflora (Kingston Rest) is a form that can grow even larger, exceeding 10" tall. This form has light purple flowers, longer leaves, and a less dense, more vertical growth habit. Photo 5 shows the exception size and vigor, even after flowering and producing seed.
After flowering, they will produce relatively large, black seeds. These can often germinate readily on their own, but a treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) at roughly 500ppm for 24-72 hr can improve germination rates substantially. Overall, these are easily to grow in warm and wet conditions, and do best with strong light.
The plant you will receive will be 1-2” tall and potted in a 2.5”x2.5”x3.5” pot. See photos 7-8 for examples of the size (there may be 1-2 plants in the pot). These will grow very fast once they settle in from shipping stress. These plants have been grown at high humidity so if you are going to grow them at lower humidity be sure to slowly acclimate them. Try to give them high humidity and bright light to help them recover.
Growing Information
Climate: Temperatures from 60-100F, prefers high humidity but can adapt to lower humidity. These love heat and grow incredibly fast when kept hot.
Light: Part to Full Sun or 20W per sq ft LED light.
Water: Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water. Sitting in 0.5”-2” of water using tray method.
Soil: 40% Peat Moss: 40% Sand: 20% Perlite or other well draining peat + sand mixes. Rinse media with distilled or reverse osmosis water to remove excess salts.
Feeding: Plants outdoors will catch lots of flies on their own. Feed fish food or roughly 200ppm foliar fertilization if they are not catching enough or if growing indoors.
